Lighting of C Hill

The prominent C that overlooks the college campus was set in place in 1924 through the efforts of Mr. T.A.F. Williams (a CSC mathematics faculty member from 1919 through 1930), his wife, and former student. Several activities associated with this C emerged as the college grew and developed. The lighting of C-Hill was one such activity.

The first recorded lighting of C-Hill was in the late 1920’s or early 1930’s. According to Ross Armstrong (CSC Faculty member, administrator, and Chadron State Foundation officer from 1933-1990), the C Club sponsored a “Lantern Walk” to the top of C-Hill for a number of years. The members and volunteers carried lanterns, forming an illuminated train as they walked up the hill, stopping at the top to outline the C. The Lantern Walk ended sometime around World War II.

In 1983, the CSC student leaders revised the lighting of C-Hill. The athletes and C-Club members cleaned and painted the C and Cardinal Key Honor Sorority organized the lighting of C-Hill during the Homecoming activities. Flashlights were substituted for the lanterns. Since then, the lighting of C-Hill has been a part of the CSC Homecoming events. The National Guard furnished light-sticks for the activity in 1988. The tradition continues on today.

Scheduled on October 5, 2023 - After Coronation and Pep Rally - Starting at Elliott Field.

Royalty Competition Guidelines

The royalty competition will include elections for a Homecoming King and Queen. Each organization is asked to sponsor a Homecoming King and Queen candidate.

Only CSC juniors or seniors are eligible to be nominated for royalty. Junior status, as determined by the Homecoming Committee, is defined as a student who has completed at least 60 semester hours of credit. The nominee must also be a member of an organization and be able to attend all Homecoming activities including Royalty Recognition, Spirit Rally, Parade, Football game (CSC Football players are eligible for candidacy), and dance.

The winners of the Royalty Competition will be determined by popular vote of the CSC student body. The Constitutional Court of the Student Senate/CAB will conduct homecoming elections. Each student should receive a message on their e-mail account to explain how to submit the royalty candidate and the process of voting.

Each royalty candidate must have his/her picture taken to be eligible for voting, if nominated by a club or organization.  Pictures will be taken by Public Relations in the Crites Lobby. The photos of each candidate will then be displayed on the internet during voting, so watch for the message in your e-mail account.

Chadron State College Student Senate/CAB reserves the right to decline any nomination that does not meet the criteria mentioned above. Any questions regarding royalty guidelines can be answered by contacting the Student Senate/CAB at (308)432-6386.

Voting Instructions: All CSC students will receive a unique link that will allow them to vote once. Students should watch their Eagle Mail account for this message. The message cannot be forwarded to others to allow them to vote.
